An introduction to the UNSHAME KY campaign and presentation for Ed Johnson (Southeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center) on commonly used terms and concepts related to addiction, as well as, alternative, person-centered language that objectively communicates OUD as a treatable medical condition.
Redefining Recovery
A presentation and panel discussion on the many paths to recovery from opioid use disorder, the stigma associated with these approaches, and the personal and professional experiences of those in the prevention, treatment, and harm reduction field. Featured speakers include, Dr. Jessica Johnson of Robley Rex VA Medical Center, Erin Cox of Voices of Hope Lexington, Shreeta Waldon of Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition, and Dr. Teresa Walker of New Leaf Clinic Inc.
How Harm Reduction Helps
Jennifer Twyman of Louisville Metro’s Harm Reduction Outreach Services presents on the proven evidence and personal experiences of harm reduction efforts in Kentucky. Harm reduction is a set of ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with substance misuse for individuals, their families, and communities by meeting people where they are.
Navigating Substance Use Disorder and Recovery Through the Holidays
An exploration of how to build recovery capital and resilience during the holiday season with four panelists who have both lived and professional experiences with various perspectives, including being a person in recovery, losing a loved one to SUD, practicing addiction counseling, teaching, and consulting, and providing research on addiction and recovery. Participants will take a journey through the hardships of lived experience during the holiday season and practical ways to manage their substance use disorder during both difficult and celebratory times.
How to Talk about Substance Use with Youth
Panelists discuss the impact of substance use on transition age youth (ages 18-26) including conversations about losing loved ones to substance use, working with transition-aged youth in clinical settings, and collegiate recovery programs. Learn about effective conversations about substance use with youth and young adults, . By the end of the webinar, each participant will be able to identify resources and tools to use in their communities to ensure readiness to have these important conversations about substance use with youth and young adults.
Combating OUD Stigma within the Workplace
Dr. Jason Roop presents on the leadership traits of people in recovery followed by a panel discussion on barriers to employment for workers in recovery; effective job placement programs; and opportunities to promote a work culture and climate that is supportive of long-term recovery.
Recovery Allies and Recovery-Friendly Communities
Featuring guest speaker, Alison Jones Webb, author of Recovery Allies: How to Support Addiction Recovery and Build Recovery-Friendly Communities. Family members, friends, neighbors, professionals, and other community members can be recovery allies! We’ll talk about the ways allies in the community can help build the recovery ecosystem and increase recovery capital, based on recent research and specific examples.
Justice Involved Recovery
Conversation around roles within the carceral system such as helping incarcerated individuals and individuals who have re-entered society. This panel brings a diversity of perspectives, from peer support and lived experience in the carceral system to legal aid to help those in recovery and re-entry services.
Substance Use Disparities in BIPOC Communities
Create space for black Kentuckians to share about the topics that are often seen as taboo in the wider substance use space. We explore historical trauma, the criminalization of drugs in the black community, and the importance of culturally relevant care. Participants will take a journey through the experiences of BIPOC communities both historically and currently. By the end of the webinar, participants will understand effective ways to support substance use disorders in BIPOC communities.
Improving Opioid Use Disorder Treatment for LGBT+ Communities
Dr. Brian Hurley, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and aaron guldenschuh-gatten, Recovery Café Lexington, review opioid use disorder in the LGBTQ+ population and strategies to create LGBTQ+ affirming support services.
Community Resources for Pregnant Women in Recovery
Discussion around women who have been pregnant and in recovery or pregnant during active substance use with a focus on experiencing stigma as a pregnant woman, including women who have used Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) during pregnancy. Panelists will unpack ethical dilemmas in healthcare settings around pregnancy and substance use disorder and discuss housing options for pregnant women in recovery.
Fentanyl: What You Really Need to Know
Explore the impact of fentanyl in our communities. Take a journey through a brief history of opioid use disorder and the introduction of fentanyl into the drug supply. Panelists will answer questions to get the facts straight and debunk myths about fentanyl.
Re-entering Communities and the Workforce
DV8 Kitchen, AppalReD Legal Aid, and Recovery Café Lexington join the webinar for a panel discussion on opportunities to establish, expand, and improve re-entry programs and processes for people with substance use disorders.
Grassroots Advocacy for Addiction Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery
Tara Hyde, CEO of People Advocating Recovery, will provide a brief overview of federal and Kentucky's policy landscape related to substance use disorder; growing support for harm reduction efforts; and opportunities to use your voice to promote a widespread understanding that long-term recovery is an achievable reality and a process that requires time and support.
Tools to Foster Inclusive Environments
Discussion on the vital issue of how to create inclusive environments in programmatic settings for treating substance use disorder and supporting people who use substances. This inclusivity includes but is not limited to BIPOC, LGTBQIA+, physical and mental health conditions, and language access. Participants will be engaged with inspiring personal stories shared by panelists to gain insights into the challenges and triumphs of individuals navigating treatment environments with diverse backgrounds and identities.
